Description: Join Boston Harbor Now and other active duty service members, veterans, and their families for the annual Veterans Day Cruise! The graceful granite archways of historic Fort Warren will greet you as you arrive for your visit to Georges Island. This Civil War-era fort is the main attraction of Georges Island and it is sure to bring out your inner history enthusiast. The construction of Fort Warren, built to protect Boston as part of a broader network of coastal defense, began in 1833 and took nearly two decades to complete. It once served as a training facility for Union soldiers and functioned as a prison for Confederate officers and government officials during the Civil War. The fort held a number high ranking civilians, including Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens and Confederate Postmaster General John Reagan. Fort Warren continued to operate as a staple of harbor defense through World War II and was decommissioned in 1947. Visitors to Georges Island can explore the fort’s bakery, parade ground, and Dark Tunnel. Enjoy a cruise to Georges Island, followed by a brief ceremony, wreath laying, and fun self-guided activities for all ages. Hot apple cider will be provided but be sure to bring a picnic lunch as there are no restaurants on the island. The ferry is not ADA accessible, however they have had folks join in wheelchairs in the past.
The ferry will leave promptly from Long Wharf North at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 12th, so please arrive no later than 10:30 am to board. The ferry will depart Georges Island to return to Long Wharf by 3:30 pm. While the Harbor Garage is closest, it is $35 for the day. Home Base has arranged discounted parking at Rowes Wharf, a 7-minute walk away, for $15. Other garages are farther from the wharf but offer less expensive parking on weekends, like the Post Office garage ($9) and 225 Franklin ($10). Fill out the registration survey form here by Friday, October 28th at 5 pm for a chance to attend!
