Running the Race to Support Home Base: Meet Thomas St. George

Retired Army Captain, Thomas St. George, is running the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon as part of the Race for Home Base team. The Race for Home Base program is a community fundraising effort that allows team members to fundraise on behalf of Home Base as they train to run their marathon.

Thomas, a New Hampshire native now residing in Townsend, MA, learned about Home Base from watching the Red Sox, a founding partner of the program, as well as his involvement with the Boston College Veterans Alumni Network. In 2021, Thomas came to Home Base as a patient after suffering with wounds sustained during his service in 2005. In his words, Thomas “finally “came home” 16 years later” to receive the care he needed to heal.

Home Base champions a holistic approach to care, focusing on the mind and body connection to heal the wounds of service, both invisible and visible. Through a combination of clinical care programs, like the Intensive Clinical Program, and wellness efforts like Warrior Health and Fitness and Resiliency Programs, Veterans like Thomas receive care and training to strengthen their minds and their bodies to improve their lives.

The physical healing now leads Thomas to Race for Home Base at the Chicago Marathon. When asked what helps him push through the grueling 26.2 miles, he jokingly replied “my feet and legs!”.  On a deeper level, Thomas attributes running as “the best PTSD treatment” and says “I think of all my brothers and sisters who gave their tomorrows for my race day”.

Thomas received hope and healing at Home Base. Now, he’s running to raise awareness and funds to ensure that others can receive the same care, at no cost to them. As Thomas says, “the work that Home Base does is amazing and long-lasting”.
