Skillful parenting is a 7-session, educational series — designed specifically for Military and Veteran Families — that focuses on practical, evidence-based strategies to help parents feel more confident, reduce stress and create a structured, supportive home environment.

What is Skillful Parenting?

At Home Base, we believe that when a Family Member serves, the entire Family serves. Skillful Parenting — developed by Home Base Staff Psychologist Dr. Wesley Sanders — is a seven-session, educational series designed specifically for Military and Veteran Families. This program focuses on practical, evidence-based strategies to help parents feel more confident, reduce stress and create a structured, supportive home environment. The program provides participants with:
  • Understanding how Military service impacts parenting & child behavior
  • Balancing warmth with healthy boundaries
  • Setting clear & consistent boundaries & consequences
  • Emphasizing proactive over reactive parenting strategies
  • Managing intense emotional reactions & outbursts effectively
  • Strategies to increase positive behaviors & reduce challenging ones
  • Managing screen time
  • Optional modules on navigating PTSD & divorce-related parenting challenges

    Offered at no cost to the participant

  • Eligibility

    Military Family Members and Veterans — regardless of the Veteran’s discharge status or era of service — and Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve Service Members
