Home Base visits Australia to support Veterans and Families

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. – Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program, continued its global mission of serving Veterans, Service Members and Families by visiting Australia last month. The trip marked an important milestone in Home Base’s regional and international expansion, showcasing both the power of community and the importance of global partnerships in advancing Veteran care.

For the first time, runners from Home Base’s Race to Home Base program participated in the Sydney Marathon, raising more than $80,000 in support of lifesaving care for Veterans and their Families. The participation highlighted the program’s growth and its ability to connect communities around the world through sport service, and healing.

Additionally, Home Base leadership were invited to meet with government leaders, Veteran stakeholders and community organizations from across the country to discuss shared challenges and opportunities in mental health, brain health and post-traumatic stress care. The conversations laid the groundwork for a future collaboration, creating a pathway for Home Base to work alongside Australian partners in expanding access to evidence-based care for Veterans and their Families.

“Home Base is deeply honored by the warm welcome we received from our Australian allies and the many Veteran stakeholders we had the privilege to meet,” said Brigadier General (Ret.) Jack Hammond, Executive Director of Home Base. “Together, we share a commitment to ensuring that those who serve, along with their loved ones, receive the very best in mental health care, brain health services, and treatment for the invisible wounds of war. Our work in Australia reinforces the importance of partnering with allied nations to both learn from one another and strengthen the global network of veteran support.”

“Over the past year, we have been privileged to receive funding to fly Australian veterans to our National Center of Excellence in Boston to deliver our world class model of care.  As a result of our team’s great work, the invitation to visit Australia and reimagine what is possible for our allied veterans marks another step forward in Home Base’s mission to bring provide healing and hope to Veterans and their families wherever they are,” added Mike Allard, Chief Operating Officer of Home Base. “We are grateful for the hospitality and collaboration shown to us in Australia, and we look forward to building meaningful partnerships that will ensure no Veteran or Family faces these challenges alone.”

Home Base’s international outreach builds on its proven model of regional expansion within the United States and underscores the organization’s commitment to forging global alliances. By working in concert with allied nations, Home Base is strengthening the future of Veteran care worldwide, ensuring access to innovative treatment, peer support and opportunities for healing.
