Home Base

From the desk of Executive Director Retired Brigadier General Jack Hammond: Memorial Day 2024

Dear Home Base Nation,

This Memorial Day, I ask you to take a moment to honor and remember our Fallen Heroes and the Families they have left behind. Each of these men and women sacrificed their tomorrows so that we could live in safety to seize our todays. Every May, we are privileged to celebrate their lives, salute their bravery and support their Families, while enjoying the freedoms they courageously defended.

Last month, we announced that the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund (MMHF) has become part of Home Base, cementing our long-standing partnership and officially marking the launch of MMHF at Home Base.

Retired Brigadier General Jack Hammond, Home Base Executive Director

MMHF at Home Base will continue their great work supporting post-9/11 Massachusetts Families of the Fallen and is currently hosting the iconic Memorial Day Flag Garden on Boston Common. To those in and near Boston this Memorial Day weekend, please visit this year’s flag garden before its conclusion on May 27. It is a breathtaking tribute that honors the 37,000+ brave Massachusetts Service Members who gave their lives defending our nation since the Revolutionary War.

Looking forward to the summer, I am proud to share that we will honor the service and sacrifice of Women Veterans during the pregame ceremony between the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees on July 27, as part of the 15th annual Run to Home Base presented by RTX, our most critical, annual fundraiser.

More than 7,000 of our Warriors were killed in action during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but 30,000 more lost their lives to suicide at home, leaving a wake of destruction and grief within their Families. Our mission to heal the invisible wounds of war continues to offer hope for thousands of Veterans, Service Members and their Families, saving lives each day. With your support and that of a grateful nation – people like you – we will redouble our efforts to stem the tide of Veteran suicide and provide our most wounded and injured with the tools they need to reclaim their lives. THEIR MISSION IS COMPLETE. OURS HAS JUST BEGUN.

If you or a loved one needs support, please do not hesitate to connect with us at homebase.org/getcare.

Sincerely,

Jack Hammond
