As a National Center of Excellence, Home Base operates the first and largest private sector clinic in America, and the only private sector clinic in New England, devoted to providing lifesaving clinical care and support for the treatment of invisible wounds.

Since our founding in 2009, Home Base has been breaking new ground, leading regional and national efforts with a multidisciplinary team of experts working together to help Veterans, Service Members and their Families heal from invisible wounds. By caring for Veterans, Service Members and their Families in a family-based clinic, and working in cooperation with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Home Base serves as a replicable model to promote the health and wellbeing of Veterans, Service Members and their Families nationwide.

Headquartered in the historic Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston with a satellite location in Fort Myers, FL known as Home Base Florida, Home Base is a nonprofit organization that operates predominantly on the philanthropic generosity of the Red Sox Foundation, Massachusetts General Hospital and a grateful nation, including federal, state and local funding; foundation grants; and donations from individuals and corporations.

Our Story

Following their historic World Series championships in 2004 and 2007, Boston Red Sox ownership, management and players – along with representatives of Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General) – visited Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, MD to meet hospitalized Veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Red Sox organization was deeply moved by the visit and sought to make a deeper, sustained commitment to serve our returning Veterans and their Families. Thus, Home Base was created in 2009 with guidance from their colleagues at Mass General, the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, along with individuals such as Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

Home Base receives a significant portion of its funding through the philanthropic partnership of the Red Sox Foundation and Mass General. The Red Sox Foundation hosts the program’s principal fundraiser, the annual Run to Home Base at Fenway Park. The Red Sox organization vigorously promotes Home Base during New England Sports Network (NESN) broadcasts and its ownership, management, players and their spouses are active in promoting the program throughout Red Sox Nation. Mass General serves as the medical leader for Home Base and is the top-ranked hospital nationwide as reported by U.S. News & World Report (2014-15).

Home Base is supported in part by the Wounded Warrior Project and Welcome Back Veterans, an initiative of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation and Major League Baseball.
