Wakeboarding Adventure Series Recap

Southwest Florida Veterans and their Families cooled off during this summer’s Adventure Series event at Revolution Cable Park in Ft. Myers, which provided families an opportunity to bond with one another and test out their wakeboarding skills on the water. More than seventeen Veterans and Family members attended the event, which was made possible through the generosity of one of Home Base’s longtime supporters, Walter Schacht, Vice President of SunTrust Private Wealth. Though he did not serve in the military himself, Schacht firmly believes civilians have an obligation to show support for those who have served.

“My support for the military is not based on family history of service, but rather on a larger understanding of how military service ensures a future for all of our families,” Schacht explained.

Now in its second year, the event is Schacht’s way of showing his appreciation for Veterans in the sunshine state. Veterans and their families were invited to spend the morning learning how to wakeboard before sitting down for lunch by the water. Many of those in attendance are affiliated with Home Base’s Southwest Florida Warrior Health and Fitness Program, which runs for three months in both Southwest Florida and New England and is held for and fully-managed by Veterans. The program is designed to improve participants’ health and well-being through supervised physical exercise and education about healthy living.

Having worked with a variety of other programs in the area, Schacht is keenly aware of the profound role Home Base plays in the community. He believes Home Base helps put Veterans in a healthier emotional, physical, and mental state, which in turn enables them to better take advantage of other offerings available within their community.

“In my opinion, Home Base is the foundation for all other Veteran based charities,” he said.

“Everyone had a great time and we’re hoping to do more events like this in the future,” said Armando Hernandez, Southwest Florida Program Manager, Home Base.
