The Family That ‘Runs to Home Base’ Together…

Casey and Kevin DiMestico will cross home plate together this July.

Father’s Day may be in June, but Casey and Kevin DiMestico will be celebrating a few weeks later this year. On July 15, the father/daughter duo from Brockton, MA will participate in the 8th annual Run to Home Base presented by New Balance at Fenway in support of Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program.

The 9K run and 5K run/walk begins outside Fenway Park and ends with participants crossing home plate, raising necessary funds for the clinical care and support provided by Home Base and their mission to heal the invisible wounds for Post-9/11 Veterans, Service Members and their Families. Invisible wounds include post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and other issues associated with the deployment cycle.

Lifelong Red Sox fans, Casey and Kevin have visited Fenway before, but never as participants in the Run to Home Base. “My dad is a United States Air Force Veteran and it has been his dream to run this race,” says Casey. ““I knew it was something important to him so last Christmas, I surprised him with a runner’s registration bib for both of us to participate in this dream run.”

Though Casey and Kevin have some experience running half-marathons and 5Ks, they both see the Run to Home Base as a bonding experience and – most importantly –  a chance to show support for Veterans and Military Families. “Working in the mental health field has given me aunique perspective on the mental health care needs of our military community and how much Home Base has done to remove the stigma and barriers to care.” says Casey.  “My dad always taught our family about the importance of dedication, loyalty, and patriotism and I am proud to give back to an organization that has done so much to support Veterans and their Families –  crossing home plate at Fenway is an added bonus!”.”

“She knows how much passion I have for the men and women who, in many different ways, have served this great Country,” says Kevin. “I am looking forward to, and am very excited to cross the finish line with my daughter for this very special cause, and maybe even starting a new family tradition!”
